Sport Oregon Chief Operating Officer Matt Reed Named to Portland Business Journal 40 Under 40

Reed to be recognized among city’s best and brightest at annual awards event

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sport Oregon is pleased to announce that Chief Operating Officer Matt Reed has been honored as a member of the Portland Business Journal 40 Under 40 class of 2024. Reed will be recognized as one of the city’s most promising leaders under the age of 40 Thursday at the Sentinel in downtown Portland during the publication’s annual awards event.

Each year, the 40 Under 40 Awards honor 40 rising stars in the local business world who have distinguished themselves in the local business community. Reed and his fellow 2024 awardees were chosen from nearly 300 nominees based on their career achievements, leadership, influence and impact.  

Reed, 38, first joined Sport Oregon in 2020 as its director of sports tourism. Named the organization’s chief operating officer in 2023, Reed leads Sport Oregon’s competitive bid process for hosted events, facilitates key tourism relationships throughout the state to support those events and manages the organization’s departmental staff and all aspects of its day-to-day operations.

In his time with Sport Oregon, Reed has played a critical role in securing many top sporting events to Oregon, including the 2030 Division I NCAA Women’s Final Four, which was awarded to Portland for the first time in 2022.

Reed has worked in sports tourism since 2012, focusing on attracting world-class collegiate, professional and grassroots sporting events, all while working closely with local partners to make these events successful. In his time with Sport Oregon, he has played a critical role in creating more opportunities and elevating Portland and the state of Oregon as a leading location for top sporting events.

Prior to joining Sport Oregon, Reed served as the national sports sales manager for Team San Jose from 2014-19. He was the sports sales manager for the Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau before joining Team San Jose, an economic development organization and the official convention and visitors bureau for San Jose, Calif.

Originally from Emporium, Pa., Reed earned a bachelor’s degree in communication arts and sciences from Penn State University and went on to earn a master’s degree in sport & recreation management from Temple University.

Matt and his wife, Laura, reside in Beaverton with their son, Ben (6), and daughter, Joey (1).
