Highlight Events
Here’s a look back at some of the most economically and socially impactful events Sport Oregon has helped bring to Oregon in recent years:
In 2021, Sport Oregon worked with the Portland Thorns and Relevent Sports Group to host the inaugural Women’s International Champions Cup at Providence Park. The Portland Thorns and Houston Dash from the NWSL hosted Olympique Lyonnais and FC Barcelona for a weekend celebration of women’s soccer.
In 2021, Sport Oregon brought stakeholders together from Travel Oregon, Travel Salem, and the Willamette Valley Visitors Association to finalize a multi-year deal to host Oregon’s inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 event in Salem. Over 2,200 athletes competed in July 2021, generating an estimated $11 million of economic impact for the region.
In 2019, Sport Oregon partnered with OSU, Travel Portland, and the Portland Trail Blazers to produce the most highly attended west coast NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional in NCAA history, bringing 22,700 fans to Portland’s Moda Center to witness Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight tournament matchups.
Sport Oregon has a strong background hosting figure skating events, including the 2018 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, 2016 Midwest and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships and 2005 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, in collaboration with the Oregon Skating Council and U.S. Figure Skating. The 2018 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships brought 1,600 skaters into the state for nearly a week, generating $2.3 million of economic impact.
In 2017, Sport Oregon supported the inaugural Phil Knight Invitational. Sixteen college teams, with a combined 23 National Championships, participated in what was the best collection of college basketball teams in one event, at a single site, in the history of the sport. One of the largest regular season tournaments in college basketball history, ESPN and the Rose Quarter hosted 24 games across the Moda Center and the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in the span of four days. 118,000 spectators attended from around the country, generating $6 million in economic impact. Also in 2017, Sport Oregon supported the Rose City Softball Association in hosting the North American Gay Athletic Amateur Alliances’ 40th Gay Softball World Series. The week-long event brought 240 softball teams from around the nation to Oregon, generating $5 million in economic impact.
In 2016, we were closely involved in the innovative IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships, which involved transforming the Oregon Convention Center into a a world class indoor track facility for the first time in its history.
In 2015, we saw Portland’s Moda Center become home to the NCAA Men’s D1 Basketball Tournament, for the third time.
In 2014, we supported the Portland Thorns and Timbers in hosting the MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park.
