2024 ANNUAL REPORT

Jim Etzel, CEO

“2024 proved to be one of the most important years in Sport Oregon’s history. With an unbelievably talented team at the helm, we were able to drive our mission and passion through hosting an array of world-class events, furthering the impact of our foundation and its initiatives, and continuing the rapid growth of our brand, board, events, and partnerships.

We all share an unapologetic love of Oregon, and we are truly grateful for everyone’s ongoing efforts to make our state even better. Together, we understand that a thriving sports tourism environment is crucial to the well-being and future of Oregon. Thanks to you all for being part of creating that future.”

As we near the end of this momentous year, it gives me great pleasure to recap our work and celebrate the Holiday Season with all of our partners and community members.”

TEAM UPDATES

This year, new board president Jim Carideo unfortunately had to cut his tenure short, as he was called to San Diego to lead the UBS branch in Southern California. Jim will forever be a friend to Sport Oregon, and has contributed to the organization in a myriad of ways over the past decade.

Shortly after Jim’s departure, it was unanimously decided that longtime executive board member and sports consultant Chris Oxley would be named board president to complete Jim’s term through August 2025. We are enormously excited to have Chris on board, and have already seen the value in his deep experience and relationships in the market.

Additionally, we were excited to welcome three new staff members to our Sport Oregon team in 2024, including Kira Swinth (Event Manager), Doug Duncan (Brand Marketing Manager), and Dakota Clarke (Special Projects Coordinator). All three individuals have fit in seamlessly with our team, and continue to drive value and mission to our board and partners.

There will be other movements on the team in 2025. Kristin Spear will head up our Foundation as the Director of Foundation Relations, and Natasha Reyes will be shifting to lead our revenue team as the Director of Partnerships.

2025 OUTLOOK

2025 will be another crucial year in our history, with projects and opportunities both regionally and statewide.

Our events team will again be leading a full slate of Sport Oregon and foundation events, including our Fuel the Future Foundation gala in May at the Multnomah Athletic Club, year three of the Sport Oregon Big Swing Golf Tournament, and the second-annual Night of Champions award show, honoring a new impressive list of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inductees.

Our team will also be heavily involved in the Expo Future Project, which has continuously aimed at transforming the Portland Expo Center campus into a sports-focused facility, and being a destination unto itself in the sports tourism realm.

Oregon will again welcome staple Summer events such as NASCAR, IndyCar, Juneteenth Rodeo, Prefontaine Classic, Rockstar Energy Open, and more, bringing fans, tourists, and sports enthusiasts to our state in droves.

We will continue to work closely with statewide partners to help source valuable opportunities for those destinations from a sports tourism standpoint. So look out for our team on the road in 2025 to do our part in bringing more events to Oregon.

SPORTS TOURISM

Since the creation of Sport Oregon’s tourism team in 2020, the organization has led the way in securing and servicing sports tourism events, ensuring that these events drive economic, marketing, and social impact within Oregon.

Jenn and Natasha have truly set the bar in 2024 with multi-layered successes in bidding-on and hosting sporting events, alongside our hospitality partners in the community. Travel Portland and Travel Oregon remain steadfast supporters of Sport Oregon’s overall mission, and continue to lead the way with our team in our tourism work.

2024 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Our team was on-site through the weekend as Portland hosted 8 teams, sending 2 teams to the Women’s Final Four. Staffing around this event was essential due to Oregon State’s distance to Portland, and we made a strategic investment to hire team hosts for each visiting team.

These hosts provided service to teams during their stay in Portland, and coordinated with Sport Oregon, Travel Portland, and Rose Quarter staff during the weekend. It was a true showcase of women’s college basketball, and a wonderful lead-in for the Women’s Final Four in 2030.

  • Our team – alongside Travel Portland and the Oregon Convention Center – coordinated and executed efforts around hosting the 2024 Sports ETA Symposium in April 2024, which proved to be the most attended and successful Symposium to date.

As our industry association - and one of the largest gatherings of sports tourism professionals and potential clients in the world – our teams showcased Portland and Oregon in all its glory to over 150 meeting planners in town in April.

  • Another Olympic-year event, our team worked diligently with Travel Portland and Mt. Hood Community College to make Portland home for the largest event on the circuit. With 2,000+ room nights in Portland over a holiday weekend, this even further drives home the reality that we are a major player in National Governing Body Olympic events.

  • Sport Oregon led the overall process of landing this inaugural skateboarding event, which happened in August 2024 with plans to commit to a multi-year deal. This event was held in Waterfront Park in downtown Portland, and brought over 25,000 people into downtown over a three-day weekend in late summer.

  • Sport Oregon has been at the table consistently around the future plans for the Portland Expo Center, sitting on a number of different committees focusing on firmly creating a “sports pivot” for Expo Center. We engage weekly with Metro staff on all factors connected to the project, and are adamant that the site needs to focus on tourism first through strict booking guidelines, while also offering a community gathering space at certain moments.

  • Along with the University of Portland, we are leading the conversation around the 2026 FIFA World Cup and having Portland serve as a Team Base Camp for the better part of a month during the tournament.

We feel confident that our package of training site, lodging, and location will contribute to hosting a high-profile international federation during the biggest sporting event in the world.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

In 2024, Sport Oregon experienced remarkable growth in membership and partnership, welcoming over 20 new corporate partners to our board. This growth highlights the recognition by businesses across Oregon of the significant role sports play in our state, driving economic vitality, fostering social connections, and igniting emotional pride. The enthusiasm of our new and existing partners underscores a shared commitment to advancing the impact of sports in shaping a stronger, more connected state. Sport Oregon has seen a 43% increase in membership revenue since 2021, showcasing our deep connections throughout the state.

Partnership Highlights

In 2024, we again experienced the validation of the need and interest for an initiative like SHE FLIES.  Through investments and commitments from corporate partners and individuals we raised nearly $150,000 for the foundation including commitments from Google, Clark Foundation, Enterprise Mobility, Portland Trailblazers, Milwaukie Lumber & Gatorade.

Sport Oregon was selected by Pacific Office Automation as one of the participating charities for the 2024 Oregon Charity Championship where we took home the 2nd place trophy earning $15,000 to support our mission of enhancing sports across the state.

Our Young Professionals Board jumped on the latest sports trend and held its second annual Pickleball Tournament Fundraiser. The fundraiser was a smashing success, raising over $7,400 for SHE FLIES and the Sport Oregon Foundation.

SPORT OREGON FOUNDATION

Now in its third year, SHE FLIES - the flagship initiative of the Sport Oregon Foundation - continues to inspire and drive meaningful change in our Oregon communities. With its mission to keep girls in the game, empower women coaches, and promote fitness for life, SHE FLIES resonates deeply with corporate partners, Sport Oregon members, donors, and community collaborators.

SHE FLIES addresses the critical need to close the gender gap in sports participation and engagement. Through targeted grants, dynamic community events, impactful storytelling, strategic partnerships, and robust networks, SHE FLIES continues to grow and connect girls and women to sports and supportive communities across Oregon.

Using sports as a catalyst, we remain committed to helping girls and women overcome barriers, build confidence, and unlock their full potential—on the field and in life. Together, we are shaping a future where every girl and woman has the opportunity to thrive through the power of sport.

Shes Flies Community Festival

Impact

In 2024, we saw the increasing need for our grant program with a 40% increase in grant applications, year-over-year. It is a clear indication that the core mission of the SHE FLIES Community Grant program resonates with many people, programs and organizations across the state. Since its inception, the SHE FLIES Community Grant program has given $250,000 to support programs and initiatives to 26 different Oregon non-profits that work day in and day out fulfilling the SHE FLIES mission.

She Flies, National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Community Engagement

SHE FLIES acts as a connector and trusted voice to create and foster safe spaces, where all girls and women feel like they can take flight into the many positive benefits of sports participation. To celebrate the 38th-annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) in February, SHE FLIES hosted a Trivia Night at the Sports Bra celebrating the achievements and contributions of girls and women in sports.  In March, SHE FLIES conducted a “Beyond the Baseline” event associated with the NCAA® Women’s Basketball Regional in Portland. This free basketball clinic was designed for girls in grades 5th to 8th to experience a fun day of on-court coaching, sports performance insights, nutritional guidance, and a Q&A session with experienced female basketball coaches and athletes.

MARKETING + EVENTS

In 2024, Sport Oregon continued to elevate its brand through dynamic marketing efforts and impactful events that bring our mission to life. Our Instagram account has been a key driver of engagement, with steady growth and high interaction rates. Looking ahead to 2025, we’re eager to expand our presence across more platforms to connect with an even broader audience state wide.

Our three flagship events—Fuel The Future, Big Swing, and Night of Champions—were tremendous successes this year, setting new benchmarks in attendance, fundraising, and community impact. Each event celebrated Oregon’s vibrant sports culture while supporting Sport Oregon’s initiatives to inspire and empower participation in sports at all levels.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

  • Sport Oregon participated and played a leadership role in a sport-focused coalition that included the Hillsboro Hops and the Eugene Emeralds- both required to meet new MLB facility requirements in order to remain part of the MLB minor league structure. Even with focused opposition towards some of the requests, our coalition was able to prevail by delivering public testimony at every level of government as well as securing letters of support from local community leaders, key associations and organizations throughout the state. While Sport Oregon’s Youth Sports Grant Fund, (Senate Bill 1539) proposed by Senator Lieber was not funded, the most critical components of the coalition’s efforts were fully funded. A big win for sports in Oregon and the coalition. A total of $43 million was secured from the legislature.

    • $15 million for the Hillsboro Hops seeking to build a new ballpark.

    • $7.5 million for the Eugene Emeralds who like the Hops seeking to build a new stadium.

    • $10 million for Oregon State University for athletic scholarships.

    • $5 million for the Eugene Civic Alliance to build a new soccer facility.

    • $3 million for Willamette University for artificial turf and lights at Roy S. ‘Spec’ Keene Stadium at Bush Park to support Salem youth baseball and softball.

    • $3 million for Round-Up City Development Corporation to support the construction of the Pendleton Regional Sports Complex.

It should be noted that Eugene voters rejected a $15 million bond in the May 2024 primary, that was needed to fund a new minor-league baseball stadium at the Lane County Fairgrounds. As a consequence, the Eugene Emeralds will need to leave, since no location in the Eugene area meets MLB’s new minor-league facility requirements.

  • Subsequent to meetings with all Multnomah County Commissioners, Sport Oregon will be receiving financial support from Multnomah County on an ongoing basis, enhancing the current support of Metro and the City of Portland. Thanks to the leadership of Commissioner Julia Brim-Edwards, an economic development budget amendment related to spectator events was proposed and passed unanimously.

In July of this year, Portland Mayor Wheeler put bureau control under the direction of the Interim City Administrator, Michael Jordan and his Deputies, who oversee the day-to-day operation of the bureaus. This is in anticipation of the city charter changes to begin January 2025. Sport Oregon has actively engaged with Mr. Jordan as well as key deputies who oversee bureaus having impact on Sport Oregon member needs. These relationships, to date are proving fruitful and will be nurtured moving forward.

Sport Oregon submitted its Annual Report to the City of Portland for the period July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. The report highlights the successes and recovery/impact to Portland that has resulted in a remarkable year of success at multiple levels. The report cites the use of all its resources, relationships, knowledge, and expertise with stakeholder community partners including Travel Portland, Oregon Business and Industry, Prosper Portland, Portland Metro Chamber, Travel Oregon, Oregon Convention Center, Metro, Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, Greater Portland Inc., and others to effectively drive and contribute to the economic recovery efforts in Portland through sports tourism.

  • The future of Portland’s political landscape began to materialize in early 2024. Partners and leaders throughout Portland formed a coalition with Sport Oregon’s participation called United for Portland (UFP). Its goal is to ensure elected officials remain focused to solve today’s challenges, most importantly improving the livability and economy of our city and region. UFP and its partners consistently educated elected officials, candidates, civic leaders, and the community on the priorities voters want to have addressed and potential solutions to these top tier problems facing the community. Sport Oregon held one of four education sessions on the importance and value of sports tourism and events. Over 75 candidates for office attended the session.

As the elections grew near Sport Oregon focused its attention on the key races that have the greatest impact on its mission and strategy. Endorsements by UFP were made in the County Commissioner races as well as the new 12-member city council. The County Commissioner race has resulted in a slight shift to a more moderate composition. In the Portland City Council races, conducted under the new proportional ranked choice method of voting, The UFP endorsed candidates won half the seats. Of the remaining 6, it is believed that 1-2 can be moved to support some of interests that are key to promoting economic development and tourism.

No endorsements were made in the Mayor’s race, however Mayor-Elect Keith Wilson, a member of the Portland Metro Chamber of Commerce has indicated his desire to work with the business community.

  • Jim, Matt and Nathan have remained very engaged in the efforts to redevelop the Portland Expo Center into a sports-focused facility. Sport Oregon has provided consistent context and insights as to how the Expo site could fill the void for the lack of sports facilities in the Pacific Northwest. Their participation on the Executive Advisory Committee, the Sports & Facilities Committee, the Scenario Refinement Committee and the Future Funding Task Force have yielded several scenarios that have been proposed and discussed at length.

Commissioners from METRO and MERC met on December 10 to hear proposed next steps moving forward with Expo as a sports-focused facility while still keeping its current clients. Final recommendations presented directs staff to propose a package of short-term, interim investments and funding sources in Metro’s FY25-26 budget.

The goal is to better prepare Expo Center to host more sporting events and tournaments to meet needs for local use and to attract regional or larger competitions. In addition, staff was directed to continue to identify and to secure financial resources and possible partnerships, including public-private partnerships, that will support the realization of the sports scenario presented to Council and MERC. Also, staff was directed to continue to make every effort to pursue the sports event market within the current venue constraints, including offering first priority booking to sporting events as specified in the Portland Expo Center Booking and Scheduling Policies and Procedures.

  • Sport Oregon (SO) has launched an effort to quantify the contributions of sports tourism and sporting events in Oregon. While no one disputes the value of sport tourism, hard data has never been accumulated from throughout the state.

A collaborative effort between SO, University of Portland (UP), and ECONorthwest (ECO) has been established and is proceeding rapidly. With the support of Oregon Business and Industry (OBI), who sees the sports tourism and the recreation economy as a pivotal component of Oregon’s economic development in the coming years. This effort can have a considerable impact on policy and economic development deliberations in the future.

Sports tourism, like other forms of tourism, bolsters economic activity by generating direct spending on goods and services, which supports businesses across the hospitality, food, and entertainment sectors. The influx of tourist dollars creates employment opportunities not only in tourism-specific roles but also in ancillary positions in the supply chain to tourism industries. Sports tourism is driven by the events themselves and the organizations that plan, host, and support events and programs across Oregon.

In quantifying the contributions of sports tourism and events in Oregon, the primary audience consists of economic development agencies, state legislators, and policymakers, but it is envisioned that this research could serve as a broad-based communications tool for a variety of audiences. Our immediate goal is to issue a report in the spring of 2025 with the goal of having it shared with Oregon legislators and presented to a host of influential audiences.
