Hankook Portland E-Prix Provides Twice the Action in Return to PIR June 29-30 – Sport Oregon Voices

All-electric, Formula 1-affiliated racing series comes to Portland as only U.S. stop again in 2024

In a matter of days, ABB FIA Formula E World Championship racing returns to Portland for a second straight year, this time featuring twice the on-track action on Saturday, June 29, and Sunday, June 30.

Following the success of its Portland debut last summer, the 2024 Hankook Portland E-Prix at Portland International Raceway (PIR) has been expanded to include a new doubleheader format. The two-day event will deliver full Formula E races on back-to-back days at PIR, with Portland serving as the site of rounds 14 and 15 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

The 2024 Formula E schedule features 17 rounds, so the PIR races figure to be ultra-competitive as teams jockey for late-season positioning with just two races remaining after Portland. As the only race on this year’s calendar to take place in the United States, Portland once again joins an impressive array of international destinations hosting the all-electric series this season. This year’s schedule has included events in Mexico City (Mexico), Diriyah (Saudi Arabia), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Tokyo (Japan), Monaco, Berlin (Germany), Shanghai (China) and Misano (Italy). Following the Portland event, the 2024 season concludes with a doubleheader in London, July 20-21.

A capacity crowd at PIR was on hand last June to witness Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy win the inaugural Portland E-Prix.

As a first-time host of a Formula E event, Portland made a strong impression in 2023. With the U.S. market being such a critical part of each year’s Formula E calendar, officials were impressed at the level of engagement and knowledge shown by the fans at PIR.

“Last year was a huge success in Portland, and we were really delighted by how the fans responded,” said Nacho Calcedo, the host cities director for Formula E.

Considering the success of last year’s event at PIR, Portland was a natural fit when it came time for officials to determine a suitable site for an additional doubleheader in 2024.

The upcoming Portland E-Prix promises a full day of entertainment for fans of all ages. Both days feature practice sessions from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., qualifying from 9:40 a.m. to 11:03 a.m., and an earlier race time this year, with a 2 p.m. start for both the Saturday and Sunday events.

To complement the on-track action, a host of entertainment awaits fans in the Allianz Fan Village, Formula E’s immersive fan festival that’s a fixture at each of its E-Prix events. Fans can look forward to live music, an autograph session and a gaming area that features racing simulators. Additional attractions include a kids’ area, roaming entertainment and a food court that highlights local flavors.

A limited number of tickets remain for the upcoming Portland E-Prix. Ticket pricing and purchase information is available at raceportland.com.

As turnout for last year’s Formula E event at PIR would suggest, it’s hard to imagine a better fit for the U.S. stop on the Formula E calendar. As an all-electric racing series that falls under the umbrella of Formula 1, Formula E is on the front foot of electric racing technology, while Oregon has long been a leader in environmental consciousness and sustainability. As more than a mere racing series, Formula E represents a race towards the future of sustainability with its all-electric cars designed to offer the familiar thrills of high-speed motorsports while at the same time combatting air pollution.

Since the Grand Prix of Portland relaunched in 2018, PIR has been buzzing with premier, national-level motorsports events in recent years. As it did last summer, this year’s Portland E-Prix falls in the middle of three marquee events being promoted by Green Savoree Portland this summer. Earlier this month, New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen logged his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory in the 2024 Pacific Automation 147 at PIR. Following the Portland E-Prix, NTT INDYCAR SERIES racing returns to the iconic Portland circuit, with this year’s BITNILE.com Grand Prix of Portland taking place at PIR from Aug. 23-25.
